There are several things you should eat and avoid while on a ketogenic diet. Click here to learn more about the keto diet do’s and don’ts.
Is the ketogenic or keto diet the best way to lose weight?
If you follow some celebrities and social media influencers, it seems like that’s the case. However, just because many can’t stop praising the keto way for helping them shed pounds and maintain a healthy figure doesn’t mean it will work for you.
Any type of diet will only be effective if you follow the rules and stick with it. The same applies to the ketogenic diet.
That being said, here’s a list of keto diet do’s and don’ts you’ll want to check and review from time to time to see some encouraging results.
Do Eat Keto-Approved Foods
For beginners, it’s best to eat foods with fewer than 5% carbs. This will help kickstart ketosis, a process where the body uses ketone bodies out of fat instead of carbs.
Some of the best foods to help your body get into ketosis include meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, high-fat dairy, and so on. For meat, make sure to avoid processed options such as sausages, cold cuts, meatballs, etc. They may have added carbs, which could kick you out of ketosis.
As for fish and seafood, salmon and other fatty fish are especially great keto foods. Aside from helping your body stay in ketosis, they’re also rich in omega-3 fats.
With veggies, you’ll want to avoid potatoes, peas, squash, lima beans, and artichokes. Keep in mind that anything starchy is off-limits, but you can eat just about as many fibrous veggies as you want.
Don’t Believe All Keto Diet Foods Are Created Equal
One of the best things about the keto diet’s popularity is there are tons of products, recipes, and tips you can try. If you like cooking, there are plenty of keto recipes online. Or if you prefer to have keto meals delivered, there are stores that can do that for you.
However, you’ll want to be sure that you’re checking the labels or reading reviews before buying any keto product. Ready-to-eat keto meals may be convenient, as well as anything labeled ‘low-carb,’ but if they’re loaded with sugars or bad fats, then you’re only wasting your money.

Is alcohol allowed on the keto diet? What about eggs? How many eggs a day on a keto diet are okay?
Are fruits a no-no? What about margarine and beverages?
It’s okay to ask a lot of questions before starting the keto diet. But to answer your questions: alcohol is on the avoid list, but for special occasions, you can have some dry wine. As for eggs, if you’re considering your cholesterol, don’t eat more than 36 eggs.
For fruits, berries in moderation are allowed, but generally, these should be treated like natural candies. Now, margarine is just unhealthy; avoid it, even if you’re not doing keto. With drinks, water is your best option, but you can have tea, zero sugar coffee, and bone broth.
