Hiking takes a lot of energy and you’ll get hungry. One of the best ways to get balanced nutrition on the trail is through a mix of dried fruits, nuts, seeds and perhaps a bit of chocolate.
The beauty of trail mix: the only limit is your imagination. Go wild with your favorite combination! Here are a few of our favorite trail mix recipes for your next hike.
Seeds and Nuts
Combine almonds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds with a dash of spices. We suggest garlic and onion powders and a hint of cayenne.

- 1/2 cup peanuts
- 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 cup sunflower seed
- 1/4 cup pine nut
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

The Sweet Tooth
Many of us love chocolate, but a hot summer day will turn your chocolate chips into hot chocolate in no time. Use candy coated chocolate to still get your fix without the mess.
- 1/2 cup of hazelnuts
- 1/2 cup peanuts
- 1/4 cup dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup M&M’s
- 1/4 cup almonds
- 3 tablespoons cacao nibs
Fruit and Nuts
If you have a bulk section at your grocery store this one can be quite diverse. Mix 50% nuts and 50% fruit. Nuts that are high in protein include peanuts, pistachios and almonds.
- 1/4 cup cashews
- 1/4 cup raw almonds
- 1/4 cup peanuts
- 1/4 cup walnuts
- 1/2 cup banana chips
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/4 cup dried apricots
Sweet and Spicy
Need a little spice in your life? This combination packs a punch.
